Born in Cape Breton, her family moved to Bathurst, NB when she was five and she left at 18 and wandered west. Working a summer job in Calgary in 1988, the Olympic year, Karen found it to be a vibrant, welcoming city — no ‘Cow town’ here. A graduate of Olds College, prior to moving on to real estate, she ran a volunteer program with seven employees and more than 5,000 volunteers. But she has also held a number of weird and wacky jobs like mining camp cook, constructing residential mobile homes (electrical, finishing & cabinetry), and working on golf courses.
